Common Dental Emergencies and How to Handle Them

Unfortunately, a dental emergency can happen when least expected, whether during a family dinner, at a child’s soccer game, or even while enjoying your morning coffee. Our team at Quest Dental is always here to help with your emergency needs, but knowing how to respond in those first few moments can make a big difference in protecting your oral health. Here are some of the most common dental emergencies, along with steps you can take until you can see our team.

Toothache or Sudden Tooth Pain

A toothache can range from mildly uncomfortable to intensely painful. If you experience sudden pain, start by gently rinsing your mouth with warm water. Floss carefully to ensure something isn’t stuck between your teeth. Over-the-counter pain relievers can help, but don’t place aspirin directly on your gums, since it can irritate them. Persistent or severe pain can often signify infection or decay, so contact your dentist promptly.

Chipped or Broken Tooth

Accidents happen, and teeth can chip or break from biting something hard or suffering a minor injury. If you can find the broken piece, place it in a clean container with milk or saline. Rinse your mouth with warm water, and apply a cold compress to reduce swelling. Even if the damage seems small, it’s important to get evaluated, as minor fractures can worsen over time.

Knocked-Out Tooth

A knocked-out tooth requires immediate attention. Hold the tooth by the crown (the top part), avoiding the root, and gently rinse it with water if it’s dirty. If possible, try placing it back into the socket without forcing it. If that’s not an option, keep the tooth in milk or a tooth-preservation solution. Quick action is key. Contacting our team promptly will greatly increase the chances of saving the tooth.

Lost Filling or Crown

A missing filling or crown can leave your tooth vulnerable and susceptible to sensitivity. Over-the-counter dental cement can offer temporary protection, but avoid using super glue or other household adhesives. Schedule a dental visit as soon as possible to prevent further damage.

Soft Tissue Injuries

Cuts to the tongue, cheeks, or gums can cause them to bleed easily. Rinse with mild saltwater and apply gentle pressure using gauze. If bleeding doesn’t slow after 15 minutes, seek urgent care.

Dental emergencies can feel overwhelming, but staying calm and knowing what to do can help protect your smile. When in doubt, contact our team—professional guidance is just a call away.
